For Saloni Kalkat, joy is embodied in the oily touch of paint to a cotton canvas. Kalkat pulls and pushes paint to create her intimate portraits in which she explores identity, diaspora, and notions of culture. Classically trained in the Western canon of oil painting, it was by reproducing ‘Old Master’ works that Kalkat developed her technical abilities. Her approach to the figure celebrates not only the outer form of her subjects, but also their inner landscapes resulting in evocative, tactile compositions with emotional vibrancy.
