A young monk in training with an offering (dana) of lotus blossoms. In Buddhism, the lotus (padma) is one of the eight auspicious symbols (Ashtamangala). It is symbolic of purity and divine birth, which is why the Buddha is often shown sitting on a lotus in bloom, representing full enlightenment. The pink lotus is the supreme lotus which is reserved for the highest deity.
