About The Artwork
The artist's practice draws on Merleau-Ponty's ideas of embodiment, Nietzsche's concept of Eternal Return, and existentialist thought to explore the construction of South Asian female subjectivity. By emphasizing the role of the body and surface play through color and texture, the work addresses how identity is continuously formed and reformed through historical and social dynamics.
In this series of paintings, some of the figures portrayed are the Artist herself, also include photographs taken of female friends. Other figures come from older pictures of female family members, such as the Artist’s grandmother and her friends, to draw connections between female subjectivity in the past and present. The figures have been embedded into a kaleidoscope of archival newspaper clippings, photographs, and historical narratives pointing to post-colonial legacies and current political affairs that continue to affect our collective consciousness and shared experiences as women in South Asia.

Amber Arifeen
Amber Arifeen is a Brooklyn-based Pakistani-American writer, visual artist, and educator. Her practice combines archive, history, and personal narrative to create political and community-engaged collaborations centered around feminist issues, South Asian female subjectivity, and socio-political narratives. Utilizing mediums such as painting, performance, sound, animation, film, and sculpture, Amber delves into themes of embodiment, power dynamics, and the lived experiences of South Asian women.
Amber's work has been recognized internationally, with solo and group exhibitions in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Dubai, Paris, Berlin, London, and in Los Angeles at Rajiv Contemporary's "Now Streaming".
